Mastitis in Both Breasts

Mastitis is inflammation, and it can involve both breasts at the same time. During breastfeeding, changes in attachment, feeding frequency, pressure from clothing, or widespread breast fullness may affect milk flow on both sides. Redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness, firm patches, and flu-like symptoms may occur. Bilateral symptoms can also reflect another problem, so an examination is useful when the pattern is new, severe, or persistent. Infection is considered from the whole picture rather than from breast soreness alone.

Keep feeds or expression comfortable and responsive rather than trying to drain both breasts forcefully. Start with the side that feels easier if that helps your baby attach, then switch as tolerated. Check the latch, avoid tight bras and pressure, rest, drink to thirst, and apply cool packs briefly to sore areas. Do not use deep massage or increase pumping to chase a feeling of emptiness. A lactation consultant can help review the entire feeding routine, including how both breasts are being used.

Seek prompt care if both breasts become rapidly more red or swollen, you develop fever or chills, pain is intense, pus appears, or you feel weak, dizzy, or very ill. Arrange a review if symptoms are not improving or if a distinct lump or soft fluid-like area remains. A clinician may need to check for infection, an abscess, or a non-breastfeeding cause.
