Mastitis in the Breasts: Symptoms and Care

Mastitis commonly presents with a tender or burning area, warmth, redness, swelling, or a wedge-shaped firm patch. Some people also develop cracked nipples, a change in milk flow, feverishness, chills, or body aches. Breast inflammation can happen during breastfeeding when milk removal is uncomfortable or pressure affects a duct, and infection can be part of the picture. A breast lump has many possible causes, so do not diagnose yourself from a lump alone. Persistent or unusual changes deserve an examination.

Feed or express according to comfort and your baby’s needs; abruptly emptying the breast more than usual may encourage further swelling. Check positioning and attachment, wear a supportive but non-tight bra, rest, and drink to thirst. A cool pack wrapped in cloth can reduce discomfort. Avoid aggressive kneading, repeated pumping to ‘empty’ the breast, or products that irritate the nipple. A lactation consultant can inspect a feed and suggest gentler adjustments. Use medicine only if a healthcare professional confirms it is suitable for you.

Contact a clinician promptly if redness spreads, pain is severe, fever or chills appear, pus is present, or you feel faint or seriously unwell. Arrange a review for a lump that persists, a soft fluid-filled area, or symptoms that are getting worse or not improving. These findings can signal infection or an abscess and may need treatment beyond home measures.
