Short answer

Mastitis can still occur six months after birth, and ongoing breast inflammation needs attention when pain, redness, or illness is worsening.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Timing
Mastitis can happen months after birth while breastfeeding continues.
Self-care
Use cooling, rest, and a comfortable feeding pattern.
Review
Worsening redness, fever, or persistent swelling needs medical advice.

Why timing does not rule it out

Mastitis is inflammation in breast tissue. It may cause a painful or warm area, swelling, redness, or flu-like symptoms while you are still breastfeeding. A breast symptom can have more than one explanation; mastitis is one possible condition, not a conclusion based on pain alone. Feeding changes, longer gaps, pressure on the breast, or irritation around the nipple may affect milk flow and inflammation.

At six months, feeding may be less predictable because your baby may be eating other foods, sleeping differently, or taking fewer breastfeeds. A sudden change can leave you uncomfortable. If symptoms are significant or unusual for you, an examination helps distinguish inflammation from other causes.

Practical steps

Keep breastfeeding or expressing according to your usual routine if you can do so comfortably; avoid pumping extra to force the breast empty. Apply cool packs wrapped in fabric, rest, and wear supportive clothing that does not compress the painful spot. Keep nipple care gentle and check whether a feeding position or latch is causing repeated soreness. A lactation consultation may be useful when episodes follow feeding changes or return in the same area.

Ask a clinician or pharmacist which pain or fever medicine fits your health history and breastfeeding plans. Do not delay assessment if home measures are not helping.

When medical advice matters

Seek prompt medical advice for fever, chills, spreading redness, a rapidly enlarging swollen area, or feeling generally unwell. Arrange review if symptoms are not settling, recur, or a lump remains. Emergency care is needed for severe weakness, confusion, breathing trouble, or difficulty drinking enough fluids.

Useful questions to take along

Could a recent change in feeds, pumping, or pressure explain this episode? Do I need an examination or treatment today? What signs would mean that I should return, and how can I protect breastfeeding while I recover?

Questions people ask

Can mastitis happen six months after delivery?

Yes. Breastfeeding-related inflammation can occur later in the postpartum period, especially around feeding changes or breast pressure.

Should I stop breastfeeding if I have mastitis?

Stopping suddenly can worsen breast fullness. Continue a comfortable routine if possible and obtain medical advice for significant symptoms.
