What should you know about manual therapy concepts?

Short answer
Manual therapy concepts include hands-on assessment, joint movement, soft-tissue work and exercise-guided rehabilitation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What manual therapy can include
A physiotherapist may use gentle pressure, massage, stretching, joint mobilisation or carefully selected manipulation. The choice depends on your symptoms, range of movement, strength, irritability and health history. The aim is usually to make movement more comfortable or practical so you can take part in exercises and daily activities.
Hands-on treatment is not a complete plan by itself. For neck stiffness after whiplash, movement restriction linked with cervical spondylosis, muscle-related pain or sacroiliac joint symptoms, a clinician may combine manual techniques with education, strengthening and changes to activity. How to prepare and take part
Tell the physiotherapist where the pain is, what movements aggravate it, and whether you have numbness, weakness, dizziness, osteoporosis, recent injury or an operation. During treatment, describe pressure, pulling, tingling or sharp pain clearly. Afterward, follow the agreed home movements and monitor whether symptoms settle, stay unchanged or become more troublesome.
A useful plan should identify the purpose of each technique, how you will judge progress and when the approach should be changed. Manual therapy may be directed at a specific area while the exercises address coordination and load tolerance.
When to pause and seek medical advice
Stop a technique and seek prompt medical advice if you develop new or worsening limb weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, severe unsteadiness, fainting, chest pain or difficulty breathing. After an injury, urgent assessment is also appropriate for severe pain with inability to use the limb, marked swelling or a suspected fracture.
Questions to ask
Which movement or tissue are you targeting? What should I feel during and after treatment? Which exercises support the hands-on work? What symptoms mean I should stop, book a review or seek urgent care?

Questions people ask
Is manual therapy the same as massage?
No. Massage may be one component, while manual therapy can also include joint techniques, movement assessment, education and exercise planning.
Can manual therapy replace exercise?
Usually it is used alongside active rehabilitation, because strength, coordination and confidence with movement need practice.
