Short answer

A mandibular device is a fitted mouthpiece that gently brings the lower jaw forward to widen the upper airway and may reduce snoring.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Warning
Breathing pauses require sleep evaluation.

How the device works

Snoring happens when relaxed tissues in the throat vibrate as air passes through a narrowed upper airway. A mandibular device holds the lower jaw and sometimes the tongue slightly forward during sleep. It is different from a generic sports mouthguard and should be assessed for fit by a trained dental or sleep professional. Snoring can also occur with nasal blockage from allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis, and it may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnoea.

Using it safely

Have the appliance fitted and adjusted rather than buying an unassessed device. Begin according to the fitting instructions, allowing time to adapt to extra saliva, dry mouth, jaw tightness, or tooth discomfort. Clean it regularly, store it as advised, and attend review if it becomes loose or causes persistent pain. Side sleeping, limiting alcohol near bedtime, and addressing nasal congestion can complement treatment. A weight management programme may be relevant when weight contributes to airway narrowing.

When to seek care

Seek medical assessment if a bed partner notices pauses in breathing, gasping, choking, or repeated awakenings, or if you have pronounced daytime sleepiness or morning headaches. These signs can indicate obstructive sleep apnoea, which needs evaluation rather than treatment with a mouthpiece alone. Contact the fitting clinician for ongoing jaw pain, altered bite, tooth damage, or difficulty keeping the appliance in place.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your snoring needs a sleep assessment, whether your teeth and jaw are suitable for the device, how advancement will be adjusted, and what follow-up checks are planned.

Questions people ask

Is a mandibular device suitable for everyone who snores?

No. Jaw, dental, nasal, and sleep-breathing factors affect suitability, so assessment is needed before use.

What if snoring continues with the device?

Arrange review of the fit and ask whether nasal obstruction or obstructive sleep apnoea needs further assessment.
