Short answer

Unplanned weight loss in a man has many possible causes, including illness, and should be assessed when it persists or comes with other symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Possible explanations

Weight can fall when appetite decreases, swallowing becomes difficult, food is not absorbed well, or the body uses more energy during illness. Dental problems, stress, depression, thyroid disorders, infection, and medication effects are possible explanations. Cancer can also present with unexplained weight loss, but weight loss alone cannot identify its cause.

Depending on the rest of your history, a clinician may ask about appetite, bowel habit, cough, pain, thirst, mood, alcohol, medicines, and changes in clothing fit. Examination and selected blood tests or scans help decide what to investigate next. Mention night sweats, fever, persistent cough, a new lump, or altered bowel movements.

Arrange an assessment

Record when the change began, your usual eating pattern, other symptoms, and any medicines or supplements. Arrange a medical appointment if the loss continues, is not explained by a planned diet or exercise change, or is affecting strength. Keep eating regular, nourishing meals and drink fluids unless a clinician has advised restriction. Do not start supplements intended to stimulate appetite without checking whether they are suitable.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical help for severe weakness, confusion, inability to keep fluids down, coughing or vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, or sudden breathing difficulty. Contact a clinician promptly for persistent fever, drenching night sweats, a new lump, ongoing swallowing difficulty, or a cough that does not settle. These signs guide urgency but do not by themselves diagnose cancer.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what causes fit your symptoms, which examination or tests are appropriate, whether medicines could contribute, how to protect nutrition, and which changes should prompt an earlier review.

Questions people ask

Does unplanned weight loss mean cancer?

No. It has many possible causes. A clinician uses the full pattern of symptoms and examination findings to decide what needs checking.

What should I bring to an appointment?

Bring a list of medicines and supplements, the timing of the change, appetite details, and any associated symptoms such as cough, pain, or bowel changes.
