What should you know about mammogram every year?

A mammogram uses X-rays to create breast images and can identify changes before they are felt. The right interval depends on personal risk, family history, previous breast findings, breast density, and local screening guidance. An invitation or routine schedule does not replace assessment of a new symptom. A recall for extra images does not by itself establish a cancer diagnosis; it means the area needs closer evaluation.

Tell the imaging team about implants, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, breastfeeding, prior breast procedures, and any new symptom. Avoid deodorant or powders on the day if the centre advises this. Bring previous images when available so they can be compared. Depending on the finding, follow-up may involve diagnostic mammography, ultrasound, tomosynthesis, or MRI.

Do not wait for the next routine mammogram if you notice a new lump, bloody nipple discharge, new nipple inversion, skin dimpling, persistent one-sided pain, or a change in breast shape. Contact the clinic promptly if a screening result asks you to return, so the recommended assessment is not delayed.

Ask why annual screening is recommended for you, which risk factors affect the interval, whether dense tissue changes the plan, what other imaging could add, and how you will receive results.
