What should you know about an MRI scan of the lung?

The lungs contain moving air, so MRI is not always the first imaging choice for every lung finding. It can be useful for selected questions involving nearby soft tissues, blood vessels, the chest wall, or spread beyond the lung. A radiologist chooses sequences that capture the area being assessed.

The scanner does not use ionising radiation. Images are made while you lie still inside a short tunnel, and the machine makes loud tapping or knocking sounds. Some examinations use contrast through a vein; tell the team about kidney problems, previous contrast reactions, pregnancy, or implanted devices.

Before the appointment, complete the safety questionnaire carefully. Remove metal items and report pacemakers, clips, cochlear implants, metal fragments, or implanted pumps. Ask whether you should avoid food or drink and whether contrast is planned. Wear comfortable clothing without metal fasteners when possible.

During the scan, use the call button if you feel unwell or anxious. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly for some images. Contact the imaging service urgently for trouble breathing, facial swelling, widespread rash, or dizziness after contrast. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty or collapse. If the scan causes distress in a confined space, tell staff immediately so they can pause and support you.

Ask why MRI is recommended, what area will be scanned, whether contrast is needed, how the result will change the next step, and whether another test such as CT or tissue sampling is more suitable.
