Lung lobectomy surgery: what to know

Equipment and setting used in Lung Lobectomy

Short answer

Lung lobectomy surgery removes one section, or lobe, of the lung to treat selected tumours while preserving as much healthy lung tissue as possible.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
Remove a selected lung lobe containing a treatable tumour
Preservation
The remaining lobes stay in place
Decision
Stage, tumour position, lung function, and general health all matter

Why this surgery may be offered

The lungs are divided into lobes. If a tumour is confined to a removable area and you can tolerate the loss of that lobe, surgery may provide local control while leaving the other lobes in place. The surgeon may also sample or remove nearby lymph nodes to clarify the extent of disease.

The operation uses general anaesthesia and may be performed through small incisions with a camera or through a larger chest incision. The choice depends on anatomy, tumour position, previous treatment, and the surgeon’s judgement. Lung cancer stage, lung-function results, heart health, and other conditions influence the recommendation. Stereotactic body radiotherapy may be an alternative for some people who cannot have surgery or who choose another local approach.

Planning before admission

Ask for a clear medication plan, including what to do with blood thinners and diabetes medicines. Tell the team about allergies, breathing problems, sleep apnoea, recent illness, and smoking. Complete the requested tests and practise any breathing exercises you are given. Plan transport home, help with meals and personal care, and a comfortable place to rest. Understanding the pain plan and follow-up schedule can make the first days easier.

When to seek urgent care

Before surgery, report a new fever, chest infection, or change in breathing because the team may need to reassess the timing. After surgery, seek advice for worsening breathlessness, fever, uncontrolled pain, wound drainage, or coughing blood. Emergency symptoms include severe difficulty breathing, fainting, blue lips, heavy bleeding, or sudden chest pain.

Questions for your doctor

What is the goal of surgery in my case? Which lobe and lymph nodes will be involved? What tests show that my lungs can manage the operation? Could the approach change during surgery? What are the alternatives, including stereotactic body radiotherapy? When will the removed tissue be reviewed, and what happens afterward?

Questions people ask

Does lobectomy remove the whole lung?

No. Lobectomy removes one lobe; removal of an entire lung is a different operation and is considered only in particular circumstances.

Can surgery be replaced by radiotherapy?

For selected tumours and patients, stereotactic body radiotherapy may be discussed. Suitability depends on tumour features and overall health.
