Lung cancer tumour marker blood test

How the structures involved in Lung Cancer differ from normal

Short answer

A lung cancer tumour marker blood test measures selected substances in blood, but it cannot by itself confirm or exclude lung cancer.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the result means

Tumour markers are substances that may be released by cancer cells or by the body in response to cancer. A result can be affected by conditions other than cancer, and some lung cancers do not release a marker that can be measured. Doctors therefore interpret the result alongside symptoms, scans, examination findings and, when needed, a biopsy. A blood test may also be used to check general health before treatment.

Using the test wisely

Ask which marker is being measured and what decision the result could influence. Check whether you need any preparation and how the result will be reported. If lung cancer has already been diagnosed, ask whether blood findings will be combined with tissue or genomic testing when treatment is selected. Do not delay an imaging appointment or biopsy because a blood result is reassuring.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt medical review for worsening breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, persistent fever, unexplained weight loss or a new hoarse voice. Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, sudden confusion or heavy bleeding. A blood marker result does not determine the urgency of these symptoms.

Questions for your doctor

Why is this marker being tested? What can a high or low result tell us? Could another condition affect it? Do I also need imaging, a biopsy or genomic tumour profiling? When will the result change my care plan?

Questions people ask

Can a normal tumour marker blood test rule out lung cancer?

No. Some lung cancers do not produce a measurable marker, so other assessment may still be needed.

Is a raised marker proof of lung cancer?

No. Other health conditions can affect marker levels, so the result needs clinical interpretation.
