Lung cancer stages and life expectancy

Staging brings together the size and position of the primary tumour, nearby lymph nodes, and whether cancer has reached distant parts of the body. Earlier stages may be confined to the lung or nearby tissues; later stages can involve more extensive local disease or spread elsewhere. Small-cell and non-small-cell lung cancers are assessed using different staging approaches.

A stage is not a personal countdown. Two people with the same stage can have different tumour features, fitness levels, treatment choices, and responses. Genomic tumour profiling may identify changes that help the team discuss targeted treatment options. Brain metastases are one example of spread that can affect planning.

Ask which tests established the stage and whether the result is clinical or confirmed after surgery. Request an explanation of the tumour type, molecular findings, treatment aim, and signs that treatment is working. Options may include surgery such as lung lobectomy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or combinations chosen for the individual situation. Palliative care can be added at any stage to relieve symptoms and support daily life.

Contact your oncology team promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, severe weakness, or a new neurological problem. A persistent hoarse voice also deserves assessment; it does not by itself establish a cancer diagnosis. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, sudden collapse, or symptoms that feel immediately dangerous.
