Lung cancer spread to lymph nodes

Lymph nodes are small immune-system structures that drain fluid from nearby tissues. Cancer cells may travel from a lung tumour into nodes in the chest or near the collarbone, and sometimes to nodes farther away. This is different from cancer spreading to an organ such as the brain; the locations are recorded separately when staging the disease.

Doctors combine scans, a tissue sample, and sometimes a procedure that collects cells from a lymph node. The report may describe the side of the chest, the node stations involved, and whether the sample contains cancer cells. A hoarse voice can have several causes, but it should be reported because chest disease can affect nearby nerves.

Your team may review imaging and pathology at a multidisciplinary meeting. Treatment can include surgery for selected localised disease, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or another systemic treatment. Genomic tumour profiling may identify changes that help match treatment to the tumour. The plan depends on whether the involved nodes can be treated with the lung tumour and on your breathing, strength, and preferences.

Ask for the exact stage, which lymph-node stations are involved, and whether more tissue testing is needed. A written plan can clarify the aim of each treatment, likely effects, and how symptoms will be managed. Palliative care can be added at any stage to support comfort, breathlessness, sleep, mood, and practical needs.

Contact your oncology team promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, persistent vomiting, confusion, or a rapidly worsening hoarse voice. Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, blue lips, fainting, sudden weakness, or inability to stay awake. These symptoms need urgent assessment regardless of the cancer stage.
