What should you know about lung cancer radiosurgery?

Despite its name, radiosurgery is not an operation. A planning team maps the tumour with imaging, then a machine directs several radiation beams at the target. The beams meet at the tumour, allowing the treatment team to limit the dose received by surrounding lung and other organs.

It may be considered for a small, well-defined lung tumour, especially when surgery would be difficult or when a person has previously received treatment. Suitability depends on tumour size, position, breathing movement, overall health and whether cancer is present elsewhere. Radiosurgery is one form of radiotherapy, and it is different from a lung lobectomy.

Expect a consultation, imaging and a treatment plan before the first session. You may need a device or positioning method to help you remain still, and the team may account for movement as you breathe. Tell them about lung disease, implanted devices, medicines and any difficulty lying flat.

After treatment, follow-up scans help the team assess the treated area. Changes on a scan can reflect healing or inflammation as well as tumour activity, so interpretation may require comparison over time. Ask which symptoms should be reported and how breathing problems will be monitored.

Contact your oncology team promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, persistent cough, fever, or coughing blood. Seek urgent help for severe difficulty breathing, blue lips, confusion or sudden weakness. A new hoarse voice can have several causes; report it if it persists, particularly during cancer follow-up.

Ask why radiosurgery is being considered, what alternatives fit the tumour location, how breathing movement will be managed, how many visits are expected, and which scan findings or symptoms would change the plan.
