Treatment for dengue fever

There is no routine home remedy that clears dengue. A clinician assesses symptoms, hydration and bleeding risk, and may arrange blood tests or repeat checks. Fever, chills, headache, joint pain and muscle aches can occur during dengue. Easy bruising or other bleeding needs particular attention. The illness can change as the fever improves, so feeling cooler does not always mean the risk has passed. A GP consultation can help distinguish dengue from other infections and tailor follow-up to your symptoms and medical history.

Rest and take frequent fluids; oral rehydration drinks may help if recommended. Use paracetamol only as directed and check combination products to avoid taking it twice. Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and similar anti-inflammatory medicines unless a clinician specifically advises them, because they may increase bleeding risk. Use mosquito protection while feverish to reduce the chance of passing infection through bites. Keep a record of fluid intake, urine, temperature, bruising and any bleeding so you can report changes clearly.

Seek emergency help for bleeding from the nose or gums, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, faintness, confusion, extreme weakness, cold clammy skin or very little urine. Arrange prompt medical review for worsening symptoms, inability to drink, new bruising or fever after travel to an area where dengue occurs.
