Short answer

Lumps under the chin and in the neck can come from infection, glands or other tissues, so persistent changes need clinical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Under the chin
Lymph nodes, salivary glands, skin and soft tissue can be involved

Mouth, throat, neck and thyroid examination may guide further testing

Possible explanations

Under the chin, a lump may involve a lymph node, salivary gland, skin or soft tissue. Elsewhere in the neck, the thyroid and deeper lymph nodes can also be involved. Dental infection, throat infection, skin inflammation and cysts are possible causes. Persistent masses can also occur with Head and Neck Cancer, Lymphoma or Thyroid Cancer. The location and feel provide clues, but they cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Your clinician may ask about recent infections, dental pain, smoking or tobacco exposure, voice change, swallowing, ear symptoms and how the lump has changed. They may examine your mouth, throat, neck and thyroid, then arrange imaging or a needle sample if the findings require it.

Steps to take

Book an assessment if the lump remains, grows, becomes hard or fixed, or returns repeatedly. Do not squeeze it or start leftover antibiotics. Write down when you noticed it, any recent dental or throat illness, and symptoms such as fever or night sweats. Bring medication details to the appointment. Cancer of Unknown Primary may be considered only after investigations identify cancer without locating its starting point.

Get help promptly for these changes

Use urgent services for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly expanding swelling, drooling, severe dehydration, facial weakness, confusion or uncontrolled bleeding. Arrange prompt medical review for persistent hoarseness, coughing blood, an ulcer in the mouth or skin, or unexplained drenching sweats. These symptoms require examination and do not prove that the lump is cancer.

Questions to ask

Ask whether the lump seems to be a lymph node, salivary gland, thyroid or skin lesion. Ask which test is most suitable, whether a dental or throat source should be checked, how results will be explained, and when to return. If the thyroid is involved, ask whether Thyroid Removal Surgery is relevant.

Questions people ask

Can a dental problem cause a lump under the chin?

Yes. Dental or mouth infections can cause nearby lymph nodes to become enlarged and tender.

When should a neck lump be checked?

Arrange an assessment if it persists, grows, feels hard or fixed, or comes with concerning symptoms.
