What should you know about a lump on top of the back of your neck?

This area can contain a skin cyst, an irritated hair follicle, a fatty growth, a tense muscle, or an enlarged lymph node. A lymph node may swell while the immune system responds to an infection of the scalp, throat, ear, or nearby skin. A firm or persistent neck mass can also be a presentation of head and neck cancer or lymphoma; that possibility cannot be confirmed by touch alone.

Notice when you first found it, whether it moves under the skin, whether the skin is red or warm, and whether it changes in size. Record tenderness, fever, night sweating, unexplained weight change, voice change, or difficulty swallowing.

Arrange a clinical assessment if the lump remains, grows, feels hard or fixed, or has no clear explanation. A clinician may inspect the scalp and neck, feel nearby lymph-node areas, and check the mouth and throat. Depending on the findings, the next step may include imaging or a needle sample. Do not squeeze, puncture, or repeatedly press the lump.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, spreading redness, or new weakness or confusion. These signs call for assessment; they do not by themselves establish cancer.

Ask: Which structures could be causing this lump? Does it seem like a lymph node or a skin lesion? What examination or scan is appropriate? Would a needle sample help? Which changes should make me return sooner?
