What should you know about a lump near the collar bone?

A lump at the front of the neck near the collar bone should be examined if it persists, grows, or has concerning associated symptoms. The location can involve lower neck lymph nodes, the thyroid, skin, or deeper soft tissue. Its position alone cannot identify whether it is cancerous.

A nearby infection or inflammation may enlarge a lymph node. A thyroid nodule or other thyroid change can create fullness at the front of the neck, while a cyst or other soft-tissue growth may sit closer to the skin. Less commonly, lymphoma, head and neck cancer, thyroid cancer, or cancer of unknown primary can present with a neck mass. Those conditions present with a lump in some people, but many lumps have a different cause.

Note whether the lump rises when swallowing, moves under the skin, is painful, or seems attached to deeper tissue. Record any cough, voice change, swallowing difficulty, fever, night sweating, or unexplained weight change.

Mark the date you noticed the lump and describe its position in relation to the collar bone. Do not squeeze it or attempt a home procedure. Arrange an appointment when it remains, enlarges, feels firm or fixed, or cannot be linked to a recent illness. A clinician may examine the thyroid and lymph-node chains and decide whether ultrasound, other imaging, blood tests, or tissue sampling is appropriate.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids, rapidly worsening swelling, or severe systemic illness. Arrange prompt review for a persistent or enlarging lump, particularly one that is hard or fixed, or one accompanied by hoarseness, ongoing cough, unexplained weight change, persistent fever, or night sweats. These warning features guide urgency; they do not establish a cancer diagnosis.

Ask which structure seems to be producing the lump and whether it moves with swallowing. Ask whether the thyroid or a lymph node is more likely on examination, what test would distinguish the possibilities, and when follow-up should occur.
