What should you know about luminal B breast cancer?

Luminal B is a breast cancer pattern commonly associated with oestrogen receptors and, in some cases, progesterone receptors. Compared with luminal A patterns, the tumour may have a higher grade, a higher growth marker, or different receptor findings. Human epidermal growth factor receptor two status is assessed separately because it can influence treatment. The label does not by itself tell you the stage, tumour size, lymph-node involvement, or whether disease has spread. Your pathology report brings these features together with imaging and examination findings to describe the cancer more precisely.

Assessment may include a mammogram, breast ultrasound or MRI, and a breast biopsy to confirm the tissue type and receptor results. A sentinel lymph-node biopsy may help assess nearby nodes during surgery. Depending on the stage and biology, treatment can involve surgery, radiotherapy, hormone-blocking medicines, chemotherapy, or targeted treatment. A breast cancer gene expression test or genomic tumour profiling may be discussed when the result could help estimate whether additional medicine is useful. Ask for copies of the pathology and imaging reports, and write down the receptor results and grade so you can compare explanations across visits.

Contact your breast team promptly for a rapidly worsening wound, fever, new shortness of breath, chest pain, severe arm swelling, or uncontrolled pain during treatment or recovery. New confusion, a seizure, sudden weakness, or a severe new headache needs emergency assessment because cancer or its treatment can sometimes affect the brain or nervous system. These symptoms do not establish the cause, but they should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask which findings define the luminal B classification, what the hormone and HER2 results show, how the stage was established, and whether gene-expression or genomic testing would change your options. Also ask how surgery, radiotherapy, and medicines will be sequenced and which side effects need a same-day call.
