What it means
Hypoglycaemia happens when glucose available to the body falls too low. It is especially relevant for people using insulin or certain diabetes medicines, but missed meals, alcohol, strenuous activity, or illness can also contribute. Warning signs may begin with hunger, sweating, tremor, palpitations, or mood change and progress to confusion, seizure, or loss of consciousness.
What to do
If you are awake and able to swallow, take a quick source of sugar according to your diabetes care plan, then recheck your level if you have a meter and eat a sustaining snack or meal when advised. Keep your treatment with you. Never give food or drink to someone who is drowsy, confused, or unconscious; place them safely on their side and call emergency services.
When to seek care
Get urgent help if symptoms do not improve, keep returning, or involve seizure, collapse, severe confusion, or inability to swallow. Arrange review for repeated episodes so medicine doses, meals, activity, and other causes can be assessed. Low blood sugar can occur in people with Type 1 Diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes and needs an individual plan.
