Low blood pressure and numb hands: what to know

When blood pressure falls, the body narrows some blood vessels and prioritises blood flow to essential organs. Hands may feel cool, prickly or numb during an episode, especially after standing, overheating, not drinking enough, vomiting or diarrhoea. Numbness in one hand, symptoms that continue after your circulation feels normal, or repeated episodes can also relate to nerve pressure, diabetes, medication effects, migraine or another condition.

A home reading is only one part of the picture. Note the reading, your position, recent food and fluids, medicines, and whether both hands were affected. This record helps a clinician distinguish a brief circulation change from a problem needing further evaluation.

Sit or lie down promptly and avoid walking until the light-headed feeling settles. Raise your legs if comfortable, loosen tight clothing around the neck, and take slow breaths. Sip water if you are awake and able to swallow, unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids. Warm your hands gently and avoid direct heat on numb skin. Stand up gradually afterwards, holding a stable surface.

Do not stop prescribed medicines or start salt products without medical advice. Arrange a GP Consultation if episodes recur, follow an illness, or interfere with work, driving or daily activities. Dizziness can accompany low blood pressure and may provide useful context.

Seek emergency help for sudden numbness or weakness on one side, facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe chest pain, severe breathlessness, a seizure, confusion, fainting with injury, or skin that is blue or unusually pale and clammy. Get prompt medical advice if numbness is new and persistent, keeps returning, or comes with severe headache, loss of balance or vision change.
