What is included in a liver function tests panel?

Common parts include ALT and AST, which can signal cell irritation; alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl transferase, which can help assess bile-flow patterns; bilirubin, which reflects processing of a blood pigment; and albumin or clotting measures, which relate to protein production and the liver’s working capacity.

The panel is not a single pass-or-fail test. Clinicians consider the combination, the laboratory’s reference ranges, earlier results, symptoms, examination findings, and possible influences such as medicines, supplements, alcohol, infection, or strenuous exercise.

Ask whether fasting or any other preparation was required for your sample, then keep the report with its units and reference ranges. Bring a current medicine and supplement list. A clinician may recommend a repeat panel, additional blood tests, imaging, or simple monitoring depending on the pattern and your history.

Get emergency medical help for confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, or yellow skin and eyes with pronounced drowsiness. Seek prompt review for worsening jaundice, very dark urine, pale stools, or ongoing vomiting.
