What can a high SGOT or AST mean?

AST is present in liver and muscle tissue. A high value may occur with liver inflammation, alcohol-related injury, medicine or supplement effects, viral hepatitis, or recent strenuous exercise and muscle damage. The size of the change is considered alongside ALT, bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, symptoms, and previous reports.

A high AST is a finding, not a diagnosis. A clinician may repeat the blood test, review medicines and alcohol exposure, examine for muscle symptoms, or request additional tests. The pattern over time can be more informative than one isolated sample.

Book a review of the complete report and tell the clinician about all prescription medicines, non-prescription products, supplements, recent infections, exercise, and muscle pain. Keep taking prescribed treatment unless the prescriber advises a change. Avoid alcohol until you have discussed the result if alcohol-related injury is a concern.

Seek urgent care for confusion, severe weakness, vomiting blood, black stools, intense abdominal pain, or yellow skin and eyes with worsening drowsiness. Prompt review is also needed for dark urine, pale stools, persistent vomiting, or rapidly worsening jaundice.

Ask whether ALT or muscle enzymes change the interpretation, whether the result should be repeated, and which medicines or supplements matter. Ask what symptoms should trigger urgent care and when the follow-up review should occur.
