What should you know about a liver function panel blood test?

Enzymes may rise when liver cells or the bile ducts are irritated. Bilirubin can provide clues about how the body is processing bile, while albumin and clotting-related measurements reflect some of the liver's production tasks. An unusual result does not identify one condition by itself; temporary illness, medicines, alcohol and problems outside the liver can also affect the pattern.

Ask the testing service whether fasting is needed, because the answer depends on the other blood tests ordered. Tell the clinician about prescription medicines, supplements, alcohol use and recent illness before the sample is taken. Do not stop a medicine unless the prescriber tells you to. Arrange follow-up so the result can be explained in context, especially if more tests or a repeat sample are advised.

Contact a clinician promptly for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, persistent vomiting, marked sleepiness, confusion or worsening pain under the right ribs. Seek urgent help if confusion, severe weakness, vomiting blood or black stools develops. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether a blood test has already been taken.
