Live ectopic pregnancy: what to know

Most ectopic pregnancies are in a fallopian tube. As the pregnancy grows, the tube may stretch and bleed. Pelvic pain, vaginal bleeding, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, or fainting can occur, although symptoms vary. Previous pelvic inflammatory disease, tubal surgery, or an earlier ectopic pregnancy can affect risk, but anyone with a positive pregnancy test and concerning symptoms needs assessment.

Clinicians may use pregnancy-hormone blood tests and a transvaginal ultrasound to locate the pregnancy and check for internal bleeding.

Contact an urgent pregnancy service if an ectopic pregnancy is suspected. Keep appointments for repeat blood tests or scans, because one early scan may not show the location clearly. Treatment depends on symptoms, scan findings, hormone results, and overall health. Options may include careful monitoring, medicine, or surgery such as removal of the affected tube.

Go to emergency care immediately for sudden severe abdominal or pelvic pain, fainting, extreme weakness, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding, or pale clammy skin. These can signal internal bleeding. Do not travel alone if you feel faint, and tell emergency staff that you may be pregnant.

Ask where the pregnancy is located, which tests are needed, what treatment is suitable, and which symptoms require emergency help. Ask how follow-up will confirm that treatment has worked and when another pregnancy could be considered.
