What should you know about lithium psoriasis?

Short answer

Lithium can trigger or worsen psoriasis in some people, so new or changing plaques should be assessed without stopping lithium suddenly.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How lithium-related psoriasis may look

Lithium-related skin changes may include a red, raised or scaly rash, often on the scalp, elbows, knees or trunk. It may itch, feel dry, crack or peel. A person who already has psoriasis may notice more frequent flares or plaques that respond differently to their usual routine.

These symptoms do not prove that lithium is the cause. Psoriasis, infection, eczema and other rashes can overlap in appearance. Compare the pattern with [Psoriasis](/conditions/psoriasis/), [Skin Rash](/symptoms/skin-rash/) and [Scaly Skin](/symptoms/skin-scaling/) while arranging a clinical review.

What to do about the medicine and skin

Record when the rash began, where it appears, whether the dose or other medicines changed, and whether sunlight, illness or skin injury preceded it. Use a bland moisturiser on dry areas and avoid picking or harsh scrubs. Keep the skin cool if heat worsens itching.

Do not stop lithium, alter its dose or restart it without the prescriber who manages it. That clinician and a dermatologist can weigh skin treatment against the reason lithium was prescribed. Treatment may involve moisturisers, prescription anti-inflammatory medicines or another plan after examination.

When to seek care promptly

Seek urgent help for blistering, skin peeling over large areas, sores in the mouth or eyes, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, fever, marked weakness or a rapidly spreading rash. Contact the prescriber promptly if the rash is new after a medicine change or is affecting sleep, movement or daily care.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pattern fits psoriasis or another rash, whether lithium could be contributing, which skin treatments are compatible with your medicines, and how to respond if the rash flares again.

Questions people ask

Should I stop lithium if psoriasis appears?

No. Contact the prescriber promptly so the skin problem and the need for lithium can be considered together.

Can lithium cause a rash that is not psoriasis?

Yes. A drug eruption, eczema, infection or another condition can resemble psoriasis, so examination is useful.
