Lipid profile and liver function tests

The tests answer different questions but can be reviewed together. Lipids help with cardiovascular risk assessment. Liver tests may include enzymes, bilirubin, albumin and other markers; an abnormal pattern can suggest irritation, reduced bile flow or altered liver processing, but it does not identify one cause alone. Alcohol, medicines, supplements, viral hepatitis, metabolic conditions and recent illness can affect results. The laboratory range and the pattern across markers matter more than a single flagged value.

Follow the laboratory instructions about food, exercise and medicines. Tell the clinician about alcohol, supplements, prescribed treatment, previous liver problems and possible exposure to hepatitis. Do not stop medicine independently. The clinician may repeat tests, examine you or request imaging. If cholesterol treatment is being considered, liver results can be part of safe baseline and follow-up planning.

Seek urgent care for yellow skin or eyes with confusion, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, unusual bleeding, profound drowsiness, or rapidly worsening illness. Emergency symptoms such as chest pressure, severe breathlessness or collapse also need immediate help. Otherwise, arrange a timely appointment for persistently abnormal results or new dark urine, pale stools or widespread itching.

Ask which liver markers or lipid components are outside range, whether a medicine or supplement may contribute, whether hepatitis testing or imaging is needed, and when to repeat the blood work.
