What should you know about lip swollen on one side for no reason?

Look for clues around the swollen side: a new lip product, bite mark, blister, broken skin, toothache, gum tenderness, or a painful lump inside the mouth. A local problem often causes tenderness in one focused area, while angioedema may produce deeper, softer swelling and can affect either side. The pattern alone cannot confirm a diagnosis. Changes in speech, facial movement, or sensation add useful information for a clinician.

Take a photo and gently check the inside of the cheek and gums without squeezing the swelling. Stop recently introduced lip or facial products, rinse after meals, and use a cool compress. Avoid popping a blister or applying leftover antibiotics or steroid creams inside the mouth. If a tooth or gum feels involved, seek dental or medical advice promptly. Keep a record of any food, medicine, bite, or procedure before the episode.

Emergency care is needed for tongue or throat swelling, breathing or swallowing difficulty, voice change, faintness, or widespread hives.
