Cause of a Swollen Lip on One Side

The location and accompanying symptoms offer useful clues. Tenderness, warmth, redness, pus, or a nearby toothache can point toward local inflammation or infection. Itching, hives, or swelling elsewhere can occur with an allergic reaction or angioedema. A cracked lip, cheek biting, new lip product, food, or dental work may irritate one area. A firm spot after a knock may reflect swelling from trauma. One-sided swelling alone cannot identify the cause, and it does not by itself mean a serious condition.

Remove a suspected irritant, rinse the mouth gently if a product or food caused burning, and use a cool compress wrapped in cloth for short periods. Do not squeeze a blister, puncture a lump, or apply unfamiliar creams inside the mouth. Note when the swelling began, what you ate or used, any new medicines, and whether it is growing. A clinician or dentist can examine the lip and nearby teeth when swelling persists, recurs, or is painful.

Seek emergency help if swelling affects the tongue or throat, breathing, swallowing, speaking, or causes faintness. Get prompt medical assessment for rapidly increasing swelling, fever, spreading redness, severe pain, or a dental infection. Arrange a routine review for swelling that does not settle or keeps returning, even when no other symptom is present.
