Bottom Lip Swollen on One Side: What to Know

A small, isolated swelling that follows biting the lip, a new lip product, or minor trauma may settle as the trigger is removed. Sudden swelling can also be part of angioedema, especially when it affects other areas or follows food, medicine, or an insect sting.

The location can point to a local problem. Tenderness, a break in the skin, bruising, or a sharp tooth may suggest irritation or trauma. A painful spot with warmth, redness, pus, fever, or a worsening lump needs assessment for infection. A blister or tingling area may fit a cold sore pattern.

Itching, hives, facial swelling, or swelling that appears quickly after a possible trigger can occur with an allergic reaction. Angioedema is a condition that can cause deeper swelling of the lips; it may occur with or without hives.

Avoid any newly introduced lip balm, cosmetic, toothpaste, food, or medicine until a clinician helps identify a trigger. Do not squeeze a blister or lump. A cool compress held gently against the area may ease discomfort, and drinking fluids can help if the mouth feels dry.

Check the lip in good light for a cut, bite mark, blister, dental edge, or spreading redness. Note when the swelling began and whether it is changing. Arrange a medical or dental assessment if it persists, keeps returning, becomes more painful, or is associated with a wound or dental problem.

Seek emergency help immediately if lip swelling is accompanied by trouble breathing, wheezing, throat or tongue swelling, difficulty swallowing, faintness, confusion, or rapidly spreading facial swelling. These signs can indicate a serious allergic reaction involving the airway.

Obtain prompt medical care for fever, severe pain, pus, rapidly increasing redness, or swelling after a significant injury. If the swelling is mild but does not improve or repeatedly returns, a clinician can examine the mouth, skin, teeth, and medicines for a cause.

Ask: Could a tooth, bite injury, lip product, or medicine explain the swelling? Does the area look infected or allergic? What symptoms should prompt emergency help? If episodes recur, should the timing of foods, medicines, or other exposures be recorded?
