Short answer

A lingering head cold may leave congestion, facial pressure or headache while the upper airways recover, but worsening symptoms need assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

May contribute
Swollen nasal lining, poor sleep or dehydration
Avoid
Smoke and prolonged decongestant-spray use

What lingering symptoms can mean

After a Common Cold, nasal lining can remain swollen and mucus may drain slowly. Blocked passages can create pressure around the cheeks, forehead or eyes, while poor sleep and dehydration can add to a headache. A gradual improvement is reassuring; symptoms that intensify or return after easing need a fresh look.

Allergic Rhinitis and Chronic Sinusitis can also present with congestion, facial pressure or headache. COVID-19, Dehydration, Dengue Fever, Heat Exhaustion and Generalised Anxiety Disorder may cause overlapping symptoms, so context matters. A severe headache with neurological changes is not something to manage as a simple cold.

Comfort measures

Drink regularly, rest, and use saline nasal spray or rinsing if suitable and used as directed. Warm shower vapour may feel soothing; avoid very hot steam that could burn you. Keep away from smoke and other irritants. A pharmacist can advise on pain relief or nasal treatment, taking account of pregnancy, blood pressure and current medicines.

Write down your temperature, headache location, nasal discharge, facial pain, hydration and whether symptoms are improving. Avoid using decongestant sprays longer than the product instructions, because overuse can worsen blockage.

When to seek care

Seek emergency help for a sudden severe headache, confusion, weakness, trouble speaking, seizure, stiff neck with fever, swelling around an eye or difficulty breathing. Arrange prompt medical care for persistent vomiting, faintness, worsening facial pain, a returning fever or feeling much more unwell. Book a review if congestion or headache is not gradually improving or keeps recurring.

Questions to ask

Ask whether your pattern fits a recovering Common Cold, Allergic Rhinitis or Chronic Sinusitis, and whether you need an examination. Mention travel, insect bites, heat exposure, new medicines and fluid intake. Ask which nasal products are suitable and which warning signs should change your plan.
