Light sensitivity with a tension headache

Short answer
Light sensitivity can accompany a tension-type headache, but strong or unusual light sensitivity may also point to migraine or another cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Reading the pattern
A tension-type headache often feels like pressure or a tight band around the head, with tenderness in the scalp, neck, or shoulders. Light sensitivity may occur, especially when tired, stressed, dehydrated, or working at a screen for a long time. Migraine presents with light sensitivity more characteristically and may bring throbbing pain, nausea, or worsening with activity. A headache diary can show whether light sensitivity appears before, during, or after pain and whether one side is affected. No single symptom confirms the headache type.
Relief measures
Rest in a quiet room with gentle, comfortable lighting. Drink water, eat regularly, relax your jaw and shoulders, and take screen breaks with the screen positioned to limit glare. A warm compress over tight neck muscles may help some people. If you use a non-prescription pain reliever, follow its label and avoid frequent repeated use without medical advice. Arrange review if headaches recur, change pattern, or interfere with work, sleep, or normal activity.
When it is urgent
Seek emergency care for a sudden explosive headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, fainting, seizure, repeated vomiting, or fever with a stiff neck. Prompt assessment is needed for a painful red eye or new vision loss. Light sensitivity with headache can occur in migraine, but a new or distinctly different pattern deserves medical attention.
Discuss at an appointment
Ask whether your symptoms fit tension-type headache, migraine, eye strain, or another pattern. Ask about a suitable pain plan, posture and screen adjustments, preventive options, and how often is too often to use acute headache medicine.

Questions people ask
Does light sensitivity prove that a headache is migraine?
No. It can occur with several headache patterns; the full set of symptoms and their timing guide assessment.
Can screen use contribute to these symptoms?
Long periods of near work, glare, poor posture, and missed breaks can aggravate headache and visual discomfort.
