Light sensitivity and skin conditions: what to know

Skin-related light sensitivity may cause burning, redness, itching, swelling, or a rash after sunlight or another bright-light exposure. Reactions can affect exposed areas such as the face, neck, arms, and backs of the hands, although the pattern varies. Some medicines and topical products can make skin react more strongly to ultraviolet light. A clinician may ask whether the reaction follows sun exposure, whether covered skin is spared, and whether a new product or medicine came before it. This symptom does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

Reduce direct sun while the reaction is active. Use shade, tightly woven clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen that your skin tolerates. Stop introducing new fragranced products until the skin settles, and do not stop a prescribed medicine without checking with its prescriber. Note the light source, time to symptoms, affected areas, products, and medicines in a simple diary. Arrange a routine appointment if episodes recur, spread, blister, or leave marked color change.

Seek urgent medical help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty, widespread blistering or peeling, faintness, confusion, or a severe illness with fever. Prompt assessment is also sensible for painful red eyes, vision change, or a new severe headache with light sensitivity. These features can need assessment beyond a skin-care plan, including conditions such as meningitis or conjunctivitis.

Ask whether the pattern suggests a sun-triggered reaction, whether any medicine or cream could contribute, and which sunscreen ingredients are suitable for your skin. Ask how to protect the affected areas, whether testing is needed, and what changes should prompt an earlier review.
