Short answer

Light sensitivity in the eyes means ordinary light feels uncomfortable, painful, or unusually intense.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it can mean

You may squint, close your eyes, need darker rooms, or develop watering and a headache. Irritation of the eye surface, inflammation, dry eyes, contact-lens problems, and migraine can all contribute. Conjunctivitis may present with light sensitivity alongside redness, discharge, or gritty discomfort; explore Conjunctivitis for more detail.

Light sensitivity is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. The pattern matters: one painful red eye differs from sensitivity with a recurring headache, while sensitivity with fever or neck stiffness needs urgent attention.

What you can do now

Move to softer, indirect lighting and use sunglasses outdoors without wearing them continuously indoors. Take contact lenses out if they feel uncomfortable, avoid rubbing your eyes, and rest from screens with regular breaks. Note when the symptom began, whether one or both eyes are affected, and any redness, discharge, headache, nausea, or vision change. Do not use someone else’s eye drops.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt medical assessment for severe or worsening eye pain, a red eye with reduced vision, new halos, an eye injury, or light sensitivity that persists. Seek emergency help if it occurs with fever, severe headache, vomiting, confusion, a stiff neck, or a new rash, because these can occur with meningitis. A sudden severe headache with light sensitivity also warrants urgent assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pattern suggests an eye-surface problem, inflammation, migraine, or another cause; whether your vision and eye pressure need checking; and which drops or pain relief are suitable for you.

Questions people ask

Is light sensitivity always an eye problem?

No. Migraine and some infections can cause it even when the eye itself looks normal.

Should I wear sunglasses indoors?

Use a dimmer environment briefly, but prolonged dark-room use can make ordinary light harder to tolerate.
