Reading the result
Pneumonia can appear as areas of increased whiteness or haziness on an X-ray because inflamed air sacs contain fluid or inflammatory material. The appearance can vary with timing and severity. Bacterial and viral infections may look similar, and an X-ray cannot reliably name the organism. The report must be considered with symptoms, examination and test results.
What happens after the X-ray
A clinician may combine the image with oxygen measurement, blood tests and a respiratory or urine sample. Tell the team about fever, cough, phlegm, breathlessness and recent exposure concerns. Follow the treatment plan and ask how the report affects your next review. Do not delay care while waiting for an image if breathing is worsening.
