What should you know about legionella pneumonia symptoms?

Legionella pneumonia often presents with fever and a dry or productive cough. Chills, headache, muscle aches, reduced appetite and unusual fatigue may accompany the lung symptoms. Nausea, diarrhoea or confusion can also occur. The pattern overlaps with Influenza, COVID-19 and other causes of Pneumonia, so a symptom list cannot identify Legionella alone.

Arrange prompt medical advice when fever and cough are accompanied by breathlessness, chest discomfort, worsening weakness or difficulty drinking. Note when symptoms began, any phlegm, recent travel or accommodation, and possible exposure to water aerosols. A clinician can check breathing, oxygen level and samples needed for diagnosis.

Seek emergency care for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, collapse, severe chest pain or inability to stay awake. Get urgent help if symptoms worsen quickly or you are passing very little urine, as serious infection can affect the whole body.
