What should you know about legionella chest X-ray?

Legionella infection can cause patchy or more widespread changes in the lungs. Similar appearances may occur with other causes of pneumonia, so the image is interpreted alongside symptoms, examination findings and tests. A normal early image does not always exclude illness, and an abnormal image does not identify the exact germ.

Arrange a clinical assessment if Legionella is suspected, especially after a significant fever, cough or breathing difficulty. A clinician may request urine or respiratory testing and blood tests, while the radiology report helps assess the extent of lung involvement. Bring the report and any previous images to your GP Consultation.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, severe chest pain or inability to keep fluids down. Worsening breathing or marked weakness needs prompt assessment even if the X-ray wording sounds mild.

Ask what changes were seen, whether they fit pneumonia, which test will look for Legionella, and when your symptoms or imaging should be reviewed.
