What should you know about a leg MRI scan?

MRI can distinguish muscle, tendon, ligament, marrow, cartilage, fluid, and many soft-tissue changes. You lie still while the scanner records a series of images; the machine makes loud tapping sounds, so hearing protection is provided. The scan itself does not diagnose cancer. A radiologist interprets the images alongside your examination and history.

Some examinations use contrast injected into a vein to make certain tissues easier to assess. Tell the team about kidney problems, previous reactions, pregnancy, metal fragments, implants, a pacemaker, or severe claustrophobia before the appointment.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and clothing. Remove jewellery, watches, cards, and other metal items. Wear comfortable clothing without metal fasteners when advised. During the scan, use the call button if you feel unwell or need help; staying still improves image quality.

Seek urgent care for a leg that becomes suddenly cold, pale, numb, or severely swollen, or for severe pain with weakness. After contrast, get urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, faintness, or a widespread rash. Contact the referring clinician if pain, swelling, or weakness is worsening while you await the result.

Ask what the MRI is intended to investigate, whether contrast is needed, how long the appointment may take, when the report will be available, and what the next step will be if the images show an abnormality.
