Short answer

Leg limping is a change in walking that often reflects pain, weakness, stiffness, or reduced confidence in the affected leg.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Describe
Record onset, painful location, walking distance, and any fall or new activity.
Watch for
Inability to bear weight, weakness, numbness, fever, or a visibly abnormal leg.

What a limp may mean

People may shorten the time spent standing on a painful side, swing the leg differently, or avoid bending the hip or knee. A recent fall can cause a hip fracture, while repeated loading can contribute to a stress fracture. Hip osteoarthritis and knee osteoarthritis can present with stiffness and pain that alter walking. The location of pain, how suddenly the limp began, and whether the leg feels weak or numb help guide assessment.

What to do

Reduce walking that worsens symptoms and use a handrail or suitable support if balance is affected. Wear stable footwear and avoid trying to correct the limp by pushing through sharp pain. Note the distance you can walk, the painful area, any swelling, and whether symptoms change after rest. A clinician or physiotherapist can assess joint movement, strength, balance, and gait, then suggest targeted treatment.

When to seek care

Seek urgent assessment after a fall if you cannot stand or bear weight, or if the leg looks shortened or unusually positioned. Prompt care is also appropriate for a new limp with severe pain, progressive weakness, numbness, or a fever. A limp that persists without a clear explanation should be assessed rather than masked with altered walking.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which joint or tissue appears to be driving the limp, whether you need an X-ray or other assessment, and what level of walking is safe. Ask whether a walking aid or physiotherapy would reduce strain while the cause is treated.

Questions people ask

Can a limp come from the hip when the knee hurts?

Yes. Hip problems can sometimes be felt around the thigh or knee, so an examination may check more than the place that feels sore.

Should I keep walking on a limp?

Gentle movement may be reasonable if it is comfortable, but worsening pain, poor balance, or inability to bear weight calls for assessment.
