Left upper lobe pneumonia: what to know

The lung is divided into sections called lobes. The location describes where changes were seen on an examination or chest image; it does not by itself identify the germ or predict how severe the illness will be. Pneumonia can cause cough, fever, chills, tiredness, chest discomfort and phlegm. Viral illnesses such as Influenza or COVID-19 can sometimes be involved, while bacteria are another possible cause.

Arrange a clinical assessment if pneumonia is suspected. A clinician may listen to your chest, check oxygen levels and decide whether imaging or other tests are needed. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed, rest, drink fluids if you can, and avoid smoking. Record changes in breathing, temperature, alertness and ability to eat or drink. Do not use leftover antibiotics.

Seek emergency help for severe or worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, severe chest pain, inability to keep fluids down or marked difficulty staying awake. Prompt medical review is also needed if fever or cough is worsening, you are producing blood-stained phlegm, or you have a condition that weakens immunity. Serious infection can sometimes progress to Sepsis.
