Left Subacromial Bursa: What to Know

Short answer
The left subacromial bursa can become irritated and cause outer shoulder pain, especially when lifting the arm, reaching overhead, or lying on that side.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common trigger
- Pain often increases with overhead reaching, arm elevation, or pressure from lying on the affected shoulder.
- Movement
- Gentle motion is usually preferable to prolonged immobilisation unless a clinician advises otherwise.
Understanding the bursa
A bursa cushions movement between structures around the shoulder. Irritation may cause tenderness over the outer shoulder, a painful arc as the arm rises, night discomfort, or difficulty dressing and reaching. Rotator-cuff tendon problems, joint irritation, or pain referred from the neck can feel similar, so the name cannot be confirmed from location alone. Visible redness, warmth, marked swelling, or feeling unwell raises a different concern.
A clinician may compare both shoulders, test active and assisted movement, and assess strength. Imaging is considered when the history or examination suggests another shoulder problem or symptoms do not settle.
Comfort and movement
Temporarily reduce repeated overhead reaching, heavy carrying, and positions that sharply increase pain, while keeping the shoulder moving gently. Support the arm when resting and consider sleeping on the opposite side. A wrapped cool pack may calm a recent flare; heat may feel better for stiffness. Do not immobilise the shoulder for long periods without advice because it can become harder to move.
A clinician or physiotherapist can guide strengthening once pain permits. Anti-inflammatory medication may help some people, but a pharmacist or doctor should check medical history and other medicines first. If symptoms continue, options such as a cortisone injection are decisions made after examination, not automatic first steps.
When to seek care
Seek urgent assessment for a shoulder that looks deformed after injury, sudden inability to lift the arm, severe pain after a fall, or a hot, red, swollen joint with fever. Get prompt advice for worsening weakness, spreading redness, unexplained illness, chest pain, breathlessness, or pain that does not improve with activity changes. A clinician may consider aspiration when swelling or infection is a concern.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Is the bursa the main pain source, or could the rotator cuff or neck be involved? Which movements should I continue? Would physiotherapy help now? Are anti-inflammatory medicines safe for me? When would an injection, imaging, or aspiration be appropriate?

Questions people ask
Can subacromial bursitis cause pain at night?
Yes. Pressure from lying on the affected side or moving the arm in bed can aggravate shoulder pain.
Does shoulder swelling always mean bursitis?
No. Swelling, warmth, redness, injury, and limited movement can have several causes and may need an examination.
