What should you know about left side ovulation pain?

Ovulation pain, also called mittelschmerz or mid-cycle pain, may occur when an ovary releases an egg. It can affect one side at a time, so left-sided discomfort may occur in a cycle when the left ovary is active. The sensation may be a dull cramp, pressure, or brief sharper pain, and it may last from minutes to a day or two. Some people notice light spotting or a small increase in vaginal discharge at the same time.

Seek urgent care for sudden or severe one-sided pain, fainting or marked dizziness, fever, repeated vomiting, heavy vaginal bleeding, a swollen or very tender abdomen, or pain when pregnancy is possible. These features can signal a problem that should not be assessed at home.
