What should you know about left side mastectomy?

A mastectomy can remove all breast tissue while preserving or removing some skin and the nipple depending on safety and the planned reconstruction. Lymph nodes may be sampled or removed to assess whether disease has reached them. The operation may be used for breast cancer or selected breast conditions, but the indication is individual.

After surgery, the left chest can feel numb, tight or altered in shape. Shoulder stiffness and arm swelling are possible concerns, especially when armpit nodes are treated. The pathology findings help determine the next stage of care.

Ask the surgeon to mark the planned side and explain the incision, drains, lymph-node procedure and expected movement limits. Discuss whether lumpectomy, reconstruction or an external breast form fits your situation. Arrange transport and help with dressing, meals and household tasks.

Keep the wound clean as instructed, take medicines exactly as directed and perform approved arm exercises. Attend follow-up visits even when the wound looks settled, because pathology results and shoulder or lymph drainage concerns may need review.

Call the surgical team for fever, increasing redness or warmth, fluid or pus from the wound, worsening pain, sudden swelling, or a drain problem. Seek emergency care for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting or sudden new weakness.

Will the skin or nipple be preserved? Which lymph nodes need assessment? Why is mastectomy recommended instead of lumpectomy? When can reconstruction occur? Which arm exercises are safe? What symptoms suggest infection or lymphoedema?
