What should you know about a left ovarian dermoid cyst?

A dermoid cyst, also called a mature cystic teratoma, develops from cells that can form different body tissues. It may contain fatty material, hair, or other tissue. The word left describes its position on the left ovary, not a separate type of cyst.

Some dermoid cysts cause no symptoms and are found during a scan for another reason. Others cause one-sided pelvic pressure, aching, bloating, or pain. A cyst can sometimes make the ovary twist, which is an emergency. Ultrasound helps describe the cyst and its blood flow, while symptoms and follow-up findings guide the next decision.

Arrange a gynaecology review if a scan has identified the cyst. Bring the scan report and note pain, bleeding, cycle timing, bowel or bladder pressure, and whether symptoms are changing. A repeat scan may be suggested when the cyst looks suitable for observation.

Treatment is individual. Monitoring may be reasonable when symptoms are mild and the scan is reassuring. Surgery may be discussed for persistent symptoms, growth, a large or complex appearance, or concern about twisting. A laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy removes the cyst while aiming to preserve healthy ovarian tissue when appropriate.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden or severe one-sided pelvic pain, pain with repeated vomiting, faintness, marked weakness, fever, or a swollen and very tender abdomen. These symptoms can signal twisting, rupture, bleeding, or another acute pelvic problem. Do not wait for a planned scan if severe symptoms begin.

Ask what the scan shows, whether the cyst has features typical of a dermoid, and when follow-up imaging is needed. You can also ask how symptoms affect the choice between observation and surgery, how ovarian tissue would be protected, and which symptoms should send you to urgent care.
