What should you know about left olecranon bursa?

Short answer
A swollen left olecranon bursa can follow pressure, injury, or infection, so redness, warmth, fever, and drainage need medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Location
- Over the pointed bone at the back of the elbow
- Common triggers
- Pressure, repeated leaning, or a knock
- Infection clues
- Redness, warmth, drainage, fever, or increasing pain
What the bursa does
The olecranon bursa sits over the pointed bone at the back of the elbow and reduces friction between skin and bone. Repeated leaning, a knock, or prolonged pressure can make it fill with fluid, causing a soft lump, tenderness, or pain when the elbow bends. A cut or skin infection can allow germs into the bursa. Gout and inflammatory joint conditions can also contribute.
A clinician may look for warmth, redness, broken skin, restricted movement, and signs of illness. If infection or another cause is suspected, fluid testing may help guide treatment. Elbow Pain can have causes beyond the bursa, so the exact location and movement pattern matter.
Protecting the elbow
Avoid leaning on the elbow and protect it from repeated knocks with padding. Rest from activities that increase swelling, keep the arm comfortably elevated when possible, and try a wrapped cold pack for short periods. Do not puncture or drain the swelling yourself. Anti-Inflammatory Medication may be suitable for some people, but a pharmacist or clinician should check your health conditions and other medicines first.
If swelling is persistent, a clinician may discuss Joint Aspiration to remove fluid and test it. Recurrent cases sometimes need treatment directed at the underlying cause. Keep any skin break clean and watch whether the lump changes in size, colour, warmth, or tenderness.
When to seek care
Seek prompt medical care if the elbow becomes red, hot, increasingly painful, or starts draining, or if you develop fever or feel unwell. Urgent assessment is also needed after a significant injury with inability to move the elbow, severe pain, or an open wound. Do not delay review when swelling is rapidly increasing.
Questions to ask
Does this look like irritation, infection, or another condition? Do I need fluid testing? How should I protect the elbow at work or during sport? When would aspiration or Bursa Removal be considered?

Questions people ask
Can I drain an elbow bursa at home?
No. Puncturing it can introduce infection and should be avoided; persistent swelling needs clinical assessment.
When is aspiration considered?
A clinician may consider aspiration when fluid needs testing, swelling is troublesome, or the suspected cause requires targeted treatment.
