Left liver function test: what to know

The panel may include enzymes that rise when liver cells or bile ducts are irritated, a bilirubin measurement related to bile processing, and proteins that reflect aspects of liver production. Results can be affected by medicines, alcohol, recent illness, muscle injury, or the timing of the sample. One abnormal value does not establish hepatitis, alcohol-related disease, or another condition. A clinician looks at the pattern, symptoms, previous results, examination, and sometimes imaging or additional blood tests. Results within the reference range do not answer every liver question either.

Ask the clinician who ordered the test to explain each flagged result and whether repeat testing is needed. Provide a complete list of prescription medicines, supplements, herbal products, and alcohol use; do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. Follow any preparation instructions for a repeat sample. Depending on the pattern, the next step may be observation, medication review, testing for viral hepatitis, or an ultrasound. Keep a record of symptoms such as itching, dark urine, pale stools, nausea, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Seek urgent medical help for yellow skin or eyes with confusion, severe drowsiness, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal swelling, or intense right-upper-abdominal pain. Get prompt advice for dark urine with pale stools, persistent vomiting, or rapidly worsening symptoms, especially after starting a medicine. An abnormal laboratory result alone is not a reason to panic, but it should not be ignored.

Ask which measurements were outside the reference range, how far they changed, and what pattern they suggest. Ask whether alcohol, medicines, supplements, viral hepatitis testing, imaging, or a repeat sample could be relevant, and when you should receive the next review.
