What should you know about left headache?

Short answer
A left-sided headache can have several causes, and its timing, associated symptoms and severity guide the next step.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
A left-sided headache can have several causes, and its timing, associated symptoms and severity guide the next step. Migraine may cause throbbing pain with nausea or sensitivity to light and sound. Nasal congestion or facial pressure can occur with allergic rhinitis, a common cold or chronic sinusitis. Dehydration, heat exhaustion, viral illness and anxiety can also contribute to head pain.
What the side can and cannot tell you
Pain on the left does not by itself identify the cause. Note whether the pain is pulsing, pressure-like or sharp, and whether movement, meals, sleep, heat, missed fluids or stress affect it. Record any fever, blocked nose, cough, rash, vomiting, visual change or neck discomfort. A familiar, mild pattern may settle with basic care, but a new or changing headache deserves medical attention because the pattern matters more than the side alone.
Helpful steps
Drink fluids regularly, rest somewhere cool and quiet, and take breaks from bright screens. Eat if you have missed meals. A pharmacist can advise on a suitable pain reliever and safe use, especially if you have kidney, stomach, liver or heart problems or take other medicines. Avoid taking pain medicine repeatedly on many days, as this can contribute to medication-overuse headache. Arrange a GP review if headaches recur, interfere with work or need frequent medicine.
Warning signs
Seek emergency care for a sudden severe headache, weakness, numbness, confusion, fainting, seizure, difficulty speaking, new vision loss, fever with a stiff neck, or headache after a head injury. Urgent assessment is also appropriate when severe headache comes with persistent vomiting, marked drowsiness or a new rash. Do not wait for home measures when these features are present.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what headache pattern your symptoms suggest, whether your blood pressure or medicines could contribute, and whether examination or further assessment is needed. Ask for a personal plan covering early treatment, hydration and sleep, triggers to watch, and the exact warning signs that require urgent help.

Questions people ask
Does a left headache mean migraine?
Not necessarily. Migraine is one possibility, but congestion, dehydration, illness, heat and other causes can produce one-sided pain.
When should recurring left headaches be reviewed?
Arrange a review when the pattern is new, changing, frequent, disruptive or requiring regular pain medicine.
