Left Flank Pain and Tenderness: What to Know

Tenderness that increases when you twist, bend, cough, or press the area can fit a muscle or abdominal-wall problem, particularly after lifting or exercise. Pain deeper in the side, especially with nausea, blood in the urine, burning urination, or waves of intense discomfort, can occur with a kidney stone or urinary infection. A kidney infection commonly presents with flank pain and may bring fever, chills, or feeling unwell. Tenderness alone cannot identify the cause, and a left-sided symptom does not point to one diagnosis.

Notice whether the pain is affected by movement, meals, urination, or touch. Rest from strenuous activity and use a comfortable position while arranging medical advice if the pain persists or is unexplained. Drink normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids. Avoid taking medicines that are unsuitable for pregnancy, kidney disease, stomach ulcers, or other conditions; a pharmacist or clinician can help you choose safely. Medical assessment may include an examination and urine testing.

Seek urgent care for severe or escalating pain, fever, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, a rigid or swollen abdomen, blood in the urine, or inability to pass urine.
