What should you know about left eye stye?

How the structures involved in Stye differ from normal

Short answer

A left eye stye is usually a tender, localised eyelid lump caused by an inflamed eyelid gland.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical site
The edge of an upper or lower eyelid
Helpful care
A clean warm compress and gentle eyelid hygiene
Avoid
Squeezing the lump or wearing contact lenses while irritated

What a stye can mean

A stye may appear at the edge of the upper or lower eyelid as a red, sore swelling. The area can feel gritty, watery, or sensitive when you blink. A small amount of crusting or eye discharge may occur, but marked changes in vision are not typical. Avoid squeezing or piercing the lump because this can irritate the eyelid and spread infection to nearby tissue. Red eye or discharge affecting more of the eye may need a different assessment.

What to do at home

Wash your hands before touching the eyelid. Hold a clean, comfortably warm compress over the closed eye for several minutes, repeating this through the day, and use a fresh clean cloth each time. Gently clean away crusting with clean water. Pause eye makeup and contact lenses until the eyelid has settled, and do not share towels, cosmetics, or eye products. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether any treatment is appropriate, especially if the swelling is recurrent or not improving.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt medical assessment if pain is severe, swelling spreads around the eye, the eye becomes difficult to open, vision changes, or light becomes unusually uncomfortable. Seek urgent help if you feel very unwell or the eye itself is painful. A GP consultation can help when the lump keeps returning, drainage is persistent, or home care has not helped.

Useful questions for your doctor

Ask whether the lump is confined to the eyelid, whether another cause of red eye should be considered, and which products are safe near your eye. Mention contact lens use, repeated styes, discharge, vision changes, and how long the swelling has been present.

Questions people ask

Can a stye cause eye discharge?

It can cause a small amount of crusting or discharge at the eyelid, but widespread discharge needs assessment.

Should you pop a stye?

No. Squeezing can worsen irritation and spread infection around the eyelid.
