What should you know about left eye discharge?

Left eye discharge may result from irritation, allergy, or conjunctivitis, and its colour and accompanying symptoms help guide the next step. Watery discharge can accompany irritation or allergy, while sticky material and eyelids that cling together can occur with conjunctivitis. One affected eye does not identify the cause by itself.

Allergic conjunctivitis often causes itching, watering, and symptoms in both eyes, though one eye may be noticed first. Infective conjunctivitis can cause redness, gritty discomfort, and discharge that returns after wiping. A blocked tear drainage pathway, a foreign body, or irritation from cosmetics or contact lenses can also cause discharge. Pain, light sensitivity, vision change, or marked swelling is less typical of simple conjunctivitis and needs assessment.

Avoid sharing towels, pillows, eye cosmetics, or drops while an infection is possible. Contact lens wearers should remove lenses and arrange prompt advice if the eye is red, painful, or vision is altered.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eye. Gently clean discharge with clean, cooled water and a fresh pad for each wipe; do not scrub. Use a clean towel, pause eye makeup, and avoid rubbing. Artificial tears or a cool compress may soothe irritation when suitable for you. Do not use another person’s drops or leftover antibiotics.

Arrange a review if discharge persists, keeps returning, spreads to the other eye, or comes with worsening redness. Treatment depends on the cause, so an examination is more useful than choosing drops by colour alone.

Seek urgent eye care for moderate or severe eye pain, reduced or blurred vision, strong light sensitivity, swelling around the eye, an injured eye, a chemical splash, or a red painful eye in a contact lens wearer. Get prompt help for fever with swelling, inability to open the eye, or symptoms that worsen quickly. Rinse a chemical exposure with clean running water while obtaining emergency advice.
