Left axillary lymph node biopsy: what to know

Equipment and setting used in Biopsy

Short answer

A left axillary lymph node biopsy removes or samples tissue under the arm so a laboratory can identify the cause of lymph node changes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Pathology may use cell studies and special stains

What the procedure can show

Axillary lymph nodes drain the arm, chest wall, and breast region. A biopsy may be advised when examination or imaging shows a node that needs a definite diagnosis. Depending on its size and position, a clinician may use a needle to collect cells or a small tissue core, or remove a larger portion of the node.

The laboratory examines the sample for infection, inflammation, lymphoma, metastatic cancer, or another explanation. Special stains such as immunohistochemistry can help classify cells. The result is interpreted alongside your examination and scans; a biopsy result is not interpreted from the left-sided location alone.

Preparing and recovering

Tell the team about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, pregnancy, and previous reactions to anaesthetic. Follow instructions about eating, drinking, and medicines. Afterward, keep the area clean and follow dressing advice. Mild soreness or bruising can occur, but the team should explain the expected recovery and how results will be shared.

Ask whether you need an MRI scan or another test before or after sampling. If a diagnosis is confirmed, your team may discuss genomic tumour profiling or treatments such as chemotherapy when clinically relevant.

When to contact the team

Contact the clinical team for increasing swelling, bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, spreading redness, worsening pain, fever, pus, numbness, or reduced arm movement. Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty, fainting, or sudden severe swelling.

Questions for your doctor

Which biopsy method is planned, and why is it suitable for this node? How should I manage medicines that affect bleeding? When and how will the pathology result guide the next step?

Questions people ask

Is an axillary lymph node biopsy always surgery?

No. Some biopsies use a needle or tissue core, while others remove part or all of a node.

What happens after the sample is taken?

A laboratory examines it, and your clinician combines the result with examination and imaging to plan next steps.
